Day 1: Fens and Waterways

After a busy morning packing and finishing off jobs, I set out with my bike and gear at 1.15.
It was a leisurely ride through a little-known country route through the Fens to Ely.
After cycling past Anglesey Abbey, an odd thing happened. A man about my age passed me and then parked in his house driveway. He waited for me and shouted across "Your saddle is about an inch too high. I can tell by how your legs are pedaling!". He was deadly serious and spoke with an assumed authority.
It was a bit weird.
I felt like saying "Look mate, I've cycled Lands End to John O'Groats and large parts of USA. I think I know how high my saddle should be..." But I didn't. I simply thanked him for his observation and cycled on.
Odd encounters tend to happen to me on these cycle tours, as veteran readers of this blog will know.
On, on through the wide-open Fens to the cathedral town of Ely. I was starting to get into my rhythm on this, the first day of my tour.
On the way, I stopped at Wicken Fen Nature Reserve for coffee.
Then I took a country road out of Ely to the town of Witchford, where I am staying with my friends Akshyadeep and Sujata on a brand-new housing estate. The traffic on the way was heavy, so I was glad of the cyclepath.
We had a very pleasant evening together with great food in their lovely home.
Tomorrow, I head in to the Suffolk/Norfolk border and the town of Thetford.
