Starting our Utah Odyssey March 2024

Some you will know that Mark Lannen (Buddhist name: Abhayanaga) and myself Richard Smart (Saddharaja) are heading out to Utah, USA, for a very big bike ride. Abhayanaga (hereafter AB) lives in Missoula, Montana with his wife Shuddhabha (SB). We are mates from long ago.

On April 15th we set out from the 10,000 feet Wah Wah mountains, near the border of Nevada and the state of Utah. Over 12 days we plan to cycle east 660 miles to Moab near where Utah borders with Colorado.

It promises to be spectacular! There will a range of National Parks to ride through, including Bryce National Park, which some say is among the most spectacular in the world.

We are mostly camping en route, and will be cycling through snowy peaks, monumental deserts, petrified forests and magnificent canyons.

There may be raging rivers to cross, also.

What an adventure! Here's the itinerary:

April 4th: Fly to Missoula from Heathrow.
5th: Arrive Missoula and rest.
6th-11th: Training - mountain biking in the Montana mountain trails - including altitude acclimatisation.
12th-14th: 800 mile road trip (with all gear) to Wah Wah Mountains, Utah - via Salt Lake City.
14th-26th The Great Ride.
27th: Explore Arches Canyonland.
28th-29th: Road trip back to Missoula and rest.
31st - May 5th: Tourism in Montana.
8th Arrive back in the UK.

I'll be blogging here daily about all aspects of the adventure with pictures & videos.

We hope to raise a few more thousand for our charities.
