Without the right gear, trips can be dangerous or at least inefficient. With the right gear, it can be the trip of a lifetime - which we hope this will be.
Tomorrow, we load the bikes up with everything, and try it all out - before we head south by car to Utah on Friday.
Of course, American cycle stores and outdoor stores contain everything, and friendly, smiling staff are right there to help.
We bought: waterproof bike jackets, gloves, cycling shirts, bike lights, water bottles, specialist pedals, handlebar bags, frame bags, bike gloves, spare brake cables (in case one snaps), bike lubricant, breakdown tools, helmets, freeze-dried camping meals (sometimes we're camping in the wilderness), camping stove fuel, and sleeping bag liners. A few other things, too.
While we were doing this, SB stayed in and made batches of delicious specialist tsampa - the staple traveller's food of Tibet. It's made of roasted barley flour, seeds and much more. We will take supplies of this great foodstuff for much-needed fuel on the road.
SB and AB are whole food fans, and I think I'll benefit from such a healthy, energy-rich diet when on the road.
They do lots of mountain walking and camping and know their stuff.
There are no Greggs Bakeries where we're going.
Right now, the weather is cold here - just like winter. According to the forecast Spring arrives on Monday - quite literally, and the weather will get sunnier and warmer. I hope so.
